Weekend Getaways from Chicago have never been easier and more romantic.

Sure, there are plenty of options. Saugatuck, MI is a little over two hours; Door County is a short four hour drive (better start early). Galena, IL is about three hours away and Lake Geneva is a little more than an hour and a half. The real question is not really how far you want to go but what you want to get out of your Weekend getaways from Chicago.

Let’s begin by looking at Saugatuck. Yes indeed it is a beautiful place right on the shores of Lake Michigan. Now, that can be so very romantic, as long as you go at the right time of year. We all know how windy and bone chillingly cold it can be on that water. Saugatuck can certainly be very nice and, of course, very touristy. If you are in the mood for a crowd or some busy sightseeing, this may be the place for you.

There is plenty of wonderful lodging in the Saugatuck area. Of course you can spend the extra dime for a five star resort or you can go minimal with a far less accommodating hotel or motel to be sure. The water is always a nice touch, and if it’s waves you want, Saugatuck is the place. One thing a visitor to Saugatuck may find fun is sailing. The docks are crowded with sail boats. At a little over two hours, I would prefer to find someplace a bit closer, especially if time is limited.

Moving over to Door County, WI we can see again the water in close proximity. Once again, sailing is the treat of the day. You can enjoy a fishing tour if the weather is nice or just a nice day on the big water of Lake Michigan. You could find yourself enjoying an afternoon of birding, scenic tours, visiting farms and orchards, or any number of cultural or exciting activities. There are a ton of exciting things to do in Door County however if you only have a limited amount of time, much of it will be spent making the four hour drive on Interstate 43 through Milwaukee and along the shore of the lake.

The trees in Galena, IL are absolutely stunning to look at in the fall. You’d be hard pressed to find a prettier picture. This small town of approximately 3500 is the county seat of Jo Daviess County and among places listed in the National Register of Historic Places. If you are a history buff, this one offers something especially to satisfy your interest.  The town and the events are family friendly so if your party has more than two, this might be a great place to visit. It is only about three hours from Chicago, on the toll roads.

Now, if it is a wonderfully romantic and fun place you are looking for, you have to visit Lake Geneva. At a mere one hour and forty minutes from Chicago it is hands down the best place for Weekend Getaways from Chicago. The town has it all; there are attractions for families like skiing, water sports, sightseeing, history, and shopping. Dining options are limitless. Notably, Lake Geneva is host to a number of lakeside mansions as it was once a popular play place vacation site for the rich and famous and was appropriately nicknamed the Newport of the West.

The Wrigley family built a mansion, Maple Lawn near the Lake in 1870 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Stone Manor or officially Younglands mansion was built by Otto Young in 1900-1901 and boasts 18,000 square feet. Edward Swift, son of Swift and Co. founder Gustavo Swift, built Villa Hortensia. Black Point mansion was erected in 1888. It was home to a large family with thirteen bedrooms and twenty rooms in all. It was the summer home of Conrad Seipp and is currently open for tours. The Baker House is currently a Bed and Breakfast and a restaurant and was built in 1885. This 17,000 square foot summer home belonged to Mrs. Robert Hall Baker. The sprawling mansion contains thirty rooms and maintains much of the original craftwork construction.

Nestled comfortably in the hills near Lake Geneva, the Timber Ridge Resort has an indoor Waterpark for year round fun for the entire family and is not a far drive from the lake. Your family could visit the resort and never leave the building and still have a wonderful weekend.

The Lazy Cloud Inn and the Lazy Cloud Bed and Breakfast exclusively cater to couples. Weekend Getaways from Chicago probably could not get any better than here especially if you are looking tranquility and romance. With the couples exclusivity, the in room whirlpool tubs and fireplaces, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to take your sweetie. Staying here you still have all the amenities of Lake Geneva at your fingertips. Just blocks away from the lake and so close to downtown you could probably hear the church bells toll at night, your stay at the Lazy Cloud Inn will create a most romantic memory. You can enjoy the nightlife, then in the morning go out and explore the shops downtown.

Lake Geneva is host to at least 365 things to do according to Facebook page by that name. With that many events and things to do, you could spend a year doing something every day. That alone is worth the less than two hour drive. For Weekend Getaways from Chicago, you could go once a month and find something different to do each visit.

With the holidays coming or upon us, we all need a break from the stress now and then. You could seek out one of the other popular places like Saugatuck or Door County. You could make that long, cumbersome drive and sure you would have a nice time. You spend three or four hours in the car, finally get checked in and begin to unwind and before you know it, the weekend is over and it is time to make that long drive home again. Yes, you could do that. Oh yes, there is no doubt those locations have much to offer and especially if you have a family.

On the other hand, you could make the short, 90 minute drive to Lake Geneva for your Weekend Getaways from Chicago and start enjoying yourself right away.
